A date with the Orient
If there is one town you should not miss in Ethiopia, it is Harar. Perched at an altitude of 1855m, it enjoys a specific geographical position and has become over the centuries a commercial crossroads where Christian civilisations and Muslims from neighbouring territories would meet time and time again. Harar was in particular the place where the poet Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) stayed; he plied various trades via the Red Sea.
Whilst travelling in the land of Afar, there is still the opportunity to go hiking in the Bale Mountains, or crossing the Rift Valley or even returning to the Danakil Depression in order to climb the Erta Alé volcano.
